FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT STILL AN OPTION FOR JOB SEEKERS

(OTTAWA, Ontario) The federal government is tightening its belt, but federal employment is still an option for job seekers. A simple look at jobs.gc.ca shows a daily average of over 250 job vacancies in the Canadian federal public service.

Last month’s budget release announced that $17.5-billion will be stripped from federal spending in the next five years. This news sent a chill down the backs of government workers and job seekers alike. One in five people in Ottawa are employees of the federal government.

The spending cuts announced in the recent Throne Speech have caused a flurry of confusion and concern for jobs seekers.

What Does This Mean for Federal Job Seekers?

Currently there are 414,713 federal employees (including military). Total employment is expected to be cut by 1% per year over the next five years (5%) dropping total employment to approximately 394,000.

“With 41% of public servants ready to retire over the next five years we are still looking at over 160,000 vacant positions to deal with” says Farhia Ahmed – Principle Consultant with The JobHunters, Federal Government Employment Specialists. She adds “The worst case scenario is that a control mechanism being considered to replace only 1 of 3 positions will be put in place. This still means over 50,000 positions will need to be filled”

No Hiring Freeze Imposed

Federal executives have a legal responsibility to bargain with the unions before any major actions are taken or announced.

The only freezing being imposed is on elected officials and operating budgets in the bureaucracy. Currently, there are talks of introducing legislation to freeze the salaries of the elected officials including, the Prime Minister, cabinet ministers, MPs and senators for the next three years. Additional salary requirements for bureaucrats will have to come out of existing operating budgets. Treasury Board President Stockwell Day says the Government will not cut benefits to the Public Service.

While opportunities do exist, the competition will be fierce and most federal job seekers just don’t know where to start or have trouble getting screened into federal competitions.

Now is the time!

Over the next few months, The JobHunters will be hosting their popular seminar on government jobs “How to Get Screened In”.
