(Ottawa, Ontario) Retirements have been increasing rapidly in the federal public service as the baby boomer generation calls it quits. 40 per cent of the current 250,000 public service is eligible to retire by 2011. Based on these statistics, it is estimated that thousands of jobs will be vacant across the country over the next five years.
In a time of economic uncertainty, this news welcomed by many in the private sector. In a report released by Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate dropped to 8% for the first time in 7 years.
While the private sector is cutting jobs, the public service is heading into a renewal phase pushing recruitment as it number two priority. In March 2008, the Clerk of the Privy Council, who has admitted we are facing a “tsunami of retirement”, released the Public Service Renewal Action Plan which includes four public service-wide priority areas for Renewal: Planning, Recruitment, Employee Development and Enabling Infrastructure.
While the opportunities for jobs are promising, the competition will be tight. Farhia Ahmed of the JobHunters Career Services is encouraging the public to begin their government job search sooner rather than later. “The federal public service is Canada’s largest and most complex institution. Along with great benefits, it has the most multi-disciplinary staff in Canada offering a place for almost every single profession. A federal government job search can be complicated, time consuming and exhausting with various screening process to get through. With thousands in the race, its best to get a head start”
To help people maximize their efforts and get their foot in the door, on July 5th, 2009, the JobHunters Career Services is offering a seminar titled “How to Get Screened In”. The seminar will focus on; understanding the federal government hiring process, how to successfully use www.jobs.gc.ca, how to write "government friendly" resumes and cover letters and further, it will offer tips and strategies on securing positions in the “hidden government job market”.
